The flywheel is definitely an issue, unless by some chance your car has the
earlier flywheel already. The later ring gear (on the flywheel) is slightly
smaller in diameter, so the early starter will not mesh with it properly.
It may work at first, but will quickly fail.

Three fairly easy solutions, take your pick :

1) Install an early flywheel and starter. Only downside to this is the
rubber drive inside the starter that fails, and finding the parts. Oh yeah,
the early starter also can't be used with most tubular headers, and is dang
heavy.

2) Cut a hole in the bellhousing to clear the later starter drive. Ugly,
but seems to work just fine.

3) Buy one of the "gear drive" replacement starters to match your flywheel.
It will fit any bellhousing, and clear the header. But be sure you get the
one that matches. For early flywheels, it should have 9 teeth on the
starter pinion, the later ones have 10 teeth. Even the vendors sometimes
get them mixed up. The only downsides to this conversion are the cost, and
the audible/visible non-original change. I love mine, but it just doesn't
sound like you're cranking a TRactor motor any more. More like winding up a
jet engine !
