McMaster-Carr sells spring steel, in either hardened (springy) or annealed (soft
for working) form, in a wide variety of widths and thicknesses.

Another alternative, if you don't mind changing the way they work, is to tap the
existing hole for a small setscrew.  I fabricated a push rod for the center vent
on my TR3A a very long time ago this way (when they were not available new) and
it's still on the car.  To remove the knob, I have to completely unscrew the
setscrew with an Allen (hex) wrench.
