They actually seem to be less common in CA, I'm not sure why.
But, when they do appear, they are small, perhaps 4" wide and 10-12" tall, green
background signs, located at the side of the road. ISTR white letters, but I'm
not sure of that. There's one to the right in this (rather blurry) photo

They also aren't always very accurate, I've seen them off by as much as 1/4
mile, so it's best to do your measured run past a number of them to average out
the variations.
