I understand that in days gone by horsemen/footsoldiers rode/walked on the
left of a track/roadway so that their sword hand was instantly available to
attack a potential enemy approaching from the other direction.

The story goes that the French changed all this as Napoleon Bonapart was
lefthanded. He commanded his troops to march on the right side of the road.

With the invention of the horseless carriage, vehicles continued to use the
left under British influence or right under French influence in what ever
part of the world they were at the time.
