I have no idea what John did but here's an example of what not to do:

If you have your head shaved and the pushrods are now too long, do not shim
the rocker shaft pedestals with washers and forget to provide a passage for
the oil to the rockershaft on the rear pedestal.

Oh, well, I wanted new new rockers anyway.
