My understanding is that the reverse gear ratio is lower than first gear ratio. With only 20 HP on hand it was not that uncommon to find a hill on a dirt/mud road where there was not enough horsepower to climb in first so reverse, with it's lower ratio, was used. Edward Hamer Petaluma CA |
