I agree that replacing the old grease is a good idea. Meanwhile, turns out I
don't exactly have to dig into my motor at all. And I feel a bit silly for
not recognizing the actual problem sooner.
My wipers had simply stopped sweeping more than about 10-15 degrees just in
the last day or so (after a Saturday afternoon with a couple of torrential
showers through which the Herald merrily waded). It was clear and sunny, so I
decided not to worry about it until I got home this evening. Still doing it
there, so I popped the hood...and realized that the entire cable and
"sheathing"
was going back and forth. Not good.
Turns out it was nothing more than the nut on the end of the sheathing
having become unthreaded from the end of the motor. Duh. Tightened that down,
and
then I tightened down the tiny Allen head setscrew on one of the wheelbox
posts...and I now have two solid, working wipers...just in time for tomorrow's
expected torrential showers.
Just glad I don't have to drop the dashboard to change a wheelbox...yet.

buy that Ragu Listerine or whatever it was?
