The excess movement could be something simple like a loose mounting but I
would suggest that worn or partially seized wheel boxes is the problem.

To check the wheel boxes for being too tight disconnect the worm drive from
the motor by removing the lid, circlip and connecting bar. (Ignore the big
nut) and manually move the wiper blades, there should be very little
resistance. If they are tight then a quick fix can be WD40 or PB blaster
applied to the spindle where it leaves the housing. You have at least an
inch of contact between the housing and spindle so be prepared for plenty of
applications. When freed off a drop of engine oil or dash pot oil should be
applied as the WD40 drys out.
