The accepted seat of the pants method for setting timing, which is also listed
in some shop manuals, it pretty straightforward.
Advance the timing until you can still accelerate from 30 mph to 50 mph at
full throttle in high gear on a level road without any pinging.
I add an additional test:  take it out on the highway and get going at the
speed limit and press full throttle, if it pings, retard the timing a little.
And, yes, it will affect the sound of the exhaust.
