You would need a digital recording ociliscope to get a true sense of why the 
misfire was occuring.  Just recording if a ignition pulse was present would 
not be enough.

The timing light clamp is a inductive pickup.

On a related subject, there is a low buck dyno that might produce good power 
results but not accomplish wat you want to do.  
http://www.charm.net/~mchaney/homedyno/dynokit.htm   This uses a inductive 
pickup and a laptop or memory 
box.  This is on my list of things to try.
