Dum-dum is for 'sound deadening' - rattling chain, tensioner, and all - the
bad looks are a secondary benefit!

<< What's the value of that stuff on the timing cover anyway? Is is for stone
protection or sound deadening? If it's sound then I would imagine a nicer
application/presentation is certainly possible. If it's just for stones,
then I can continue to live without it.
