I've seen rebuilt TR diffys go for $750-$950.
I am surprized your spider gears 'went' as their main purpose is to simply
equalize the rear wheels (ie; for going around turns etc.) and 'sized' washers
are available to take up typical slop they get (about $2 each and 2 usually
required). They would have to be really abused to need replacing but you could
get new 'used' ones fairly easily.
You might ask to look at all these parts 'for your own education' even if you
opt to buy all new guts, or in the end purchase a rebuilt on exchange.
Most rebuilts I believe use most of the original items, bearings and gears,
etc. but they re-shim these items to get them back to factory specs like
resetting the 'backlash' ie; the tiny space between the meshing teeth is
adjusted
with shims. The 'preload' (factory designated pressure loads put on bearings
using shims), and of course all new seals.
Setting backlash and preloads is a real pain without the exact TR specific
tools - but a well-versed mechanic can do it without these specific tools by
dissassembling and reassembling numerous times to get it right.
Good luck

>>Just got the bad news back from my mechanic:

Rear end is shot, pretty much everything except the housing. He has
located all the necessary parts except spider gears.

The question is, does anyone know where I can find some spider gears?
He also said I'd be better off with a complete rebuilt axle from
shoe to shoe. Anyone have a good TR4 axle for sale?

BTW, he has quoted $1400 for parts and labor. Does this sound
reasonable?<<
