    Joe & Co:
This scam happened to my son. He recently put an auto in-dash DVD
player for sale on the internet. Right away he was contacted by a man
willing to purchase it. ($1800.00). The man sent my son a "Bank Check"
drawn from Bank of America. When my son received the check it was
written for the sum of $4700.00. (remember the purchase price was
1800.00). My son asked me if he could deposit the check into my account
to clear?
When I saw how much it was for... I got suspicious and told my son
"no way". My son contacted the buyer via email to let him know the check
was written for much more ($2900.00) the the agreed purchase price. The
buyer stated "No sweat, my partner & I make a living buying items on the
web. My partner simply wrote the check for too much. Cash the check &
send me the difference".
Again I was cautious and told my son to call Bank of America to
verify funds. He did, and the Bank said that there was a check for
$4700.00 written out to my son's name and that it was funded!
I then told my son to take the suspicious check to the Mass State
Police. He did & the detective made some calls, came back & said..
"Looks like its good, cash it!"
My son opened a account with it at a local bank. A day later he
called the bank. The bank told him it cleared. He went to the bank
withdrew the $4700.00. Paid off $1800.00 in debt. Contacted the buyer to
make arrangements to send back the extra $2900.00. The buyer requested
it via Western Union. When my son found out the costs to send the money
was over 200.00. He again contacted the buyer to tell him the costs. And
that he (my son) was not going to take the Western Union charges out of
his share.
Again the buyer told my son "Western Union me the money less the
Western Union costs. My son did. A day later my son got a call from the
State Police. The check was a fraud. When my son & I explained what
happened, He was off the hook. But this does happen to "American Bank
Checks. My son made every effort to make sure it was good. The bottom
line even the Bank cleared it.
    Be careful! Very careful
