There is the possibility that I might re-import a roadworthy RHD 1954
Standard 8 to UK from Arizona in the very near future. However,
neither I nor the current owner has ever shipped a car across the
Atlantic, and we haven't the faintest idea of the costs or the problems
involved. If anyone has ever done this (or done it in reverse), I'd be
deeply grateful for any guidance you might be able to give,k or
experiences you might share. I have already thought of the following
questions, but I'm sure there are probably a whole lot more that I
should be asking...
Are there any US-based specialists in shipping classic cars across the
pond?
What shipping options are available? Palletised? Crated?
Part-container-load?
How much does each option typically cost for a little car like a
Standard 8? (For those with more exotic tastes, an 8 is very
approximately the size of a sidescreen TR).
What is the likelihood of the freight costing me more than buying
another Standard 8 in UK?
Are US freight forwarders happy to collect a vehicle from Arizona for
sea-freight to UK, or would the seller need to get the thing to, say,
New York in the first instance?
What paperwork (other than the usual shipping docs) needs to be
completed at each end, in what order, and to what timescale?
What preparations need to be made to the vehicle? Drained of all
fluids? Battery disconnected? Sterilised? Insecticide treatment?
What duty and taxes are payable on arrival UK port? Can I claim VAT
exemption for it as a classic vehicle, or because it was originally
exported from UK, or for some other excuseXXXXXX reason?
What questions have I forgotten to ask??
