Dave,
In the past that type of bet was designed to indicate that one would be willing 
to wager something worthless against something fairly valuable to show
how sincerely they felt about their proposition.  Nowadays, since most 
doughnuts sell for almost a buck, it seems to lose its meaning!  :)
