On our newly built PI motor (fitted to a 2500 S saloon) we have ran new
fuel lines etc and as part of the conversion from carbs to PI have had
to install the PI fuel tank.

At the moment we are getting a lot of fuel appearing in the boot. I
checked for leaks when then engine wasn't running and found none.

With the engine idling we are losing large amounts of fuel from the hose
that returns 'left over' fuel from the metering unit into the tank.
Obviously at idle we are using the least fuel and the fuel pump is still
pushing to keep the pressure up.

I came to the realisation that the fuel return lines (from the pressure
relief valve and the metering unit) should be just trickling or flowing
freely back into the tank. The whole system is pressurised at the
moment and the return lines are having to fight to get back into the
tank.

Now normally I would assume that there is meant to be a vented fuel cap
or a vent line out to a charcoal canister or something. I have no vents
- my cap is of the closed type and every diagram I look at does not show
any venting.

Can someone explain what I should do?

I was thinking I would get one of the old white vapour trap thingo's
that sit on an emission controlled car in the boot above the fuel tank -
and tap a line from the top of the tank or the fuel filler hose and sit
the vapour trap high up in the boot. I was then thinking that from the
vapour trap I would run another piece of hose to below the car somewhere
so it could vent out to free air.

What are other people doing>??? Should I just look for a vented cap or
am I looking at this from the wrong way.
