OK, it's getting weirder. The pictures in the Moss and Vicky Brit catalogs
show there IS no dipstick tube. The dipstick I have LOOKS like the one for
sale for the TR4 and does not look like the one for the 6-cylinder cars in
the Vicky Brit catalog.

Back to the shop. The distance from my new mark for oil from the factory
"full" mark, let's measure down that far from where the stop disc is now.
Look at that! There are dents on the dipstick as if there was something
crimped there.

The stop disc looks as if it could be moved. Yes, it can, with enough
force. Bend and spring the secondary section of the dipstick a bit until
the disc stays put at those dents. Push dipstick into its home. Seems the
bending of the secondary also took out the rattle the dipstick had. Presto,
the oil level is now right at the factory "full" mark.

Summary: The dipstick has been changing, and I am an idiot for not figuring
this out sooner.

On the discussion of TR4 oil capacity, here is my information and source:

Engine from dry, 13.2 US pints or 6.25 Litres.
Drain and fill, 12 US pints or 5.7 Litres.
