Guys
As some of you know, I'm a bit of a soft touch for doing long distance
stuff in old cars for Charity. This year's Run which I've organised in
the UK takes place this weekend starting at 11.00 on Saturday and
finishing on Sunday at 14.00 - 620 odd miles later. I know that for
many of you, 620 miles is no great shakes but when much of it is down
narrow country roads with overdrive 4th being a rare luxury, the
distance takes on a new significance. Very much a 'Hedge Bottoms and
Rat Runs' odyssey.
We're driving this year for a charity who will be giving the money we
raise for children with kidney failure to have a one week adventure
centre holiday. For the majority, a holiday for anyone with renal
failure is a total non-event because the life-sustaining dialysis the
kids have to have, usually can't be provided by hospitals away from
home. In this case, their dialysis is guaranteed.
Throughout the event itself, I'll be running my video camera on its
tripod between the two front seats and I've no more idea than you what
will be recorded - but I intend to capture as much of the socialising
side as poss, together with te driving and some footage of old castle
sites. There's a new 90 minute tape already loaded and I intend to use
all of it! We're visiting seventeen different castles during the event
(I think the earliest was built in 1120) - and many of them in areas
of outstanding scenic beauty. The offer is this - *and there are
ABSOLUTELY NO financial strings attached." When I get home, I'll be
making some dupes of the master tape for various people in the UK and
I can easily make another and get it converted to NTSC. If anyone in
the States/Canada would like to see this, send me your name, full mail
address, phone number and email address off list. I'll then compile
them into a master address list, mailing the tape with the address
list to the person at the top of the list. He/she then sends it on to
the next one after viewing and it goes like that until everyone has
seen it. I need your email addresses because if tere are some
latecomers who want to see the tape after I've mailed it, contacting
someone in the chain should be fairly easy.
The event this year is not restricted only to Triumphs - and we'll be
seeing some other makes as well, including three modern cars. The
whole field is currently made up as follows:
1x Austin Maxi
1x MGA FHC - a car well known in the UK for its classic rally exploits
1x Marina 1.8TC saloon
2x Rover P6's - a 2000 and a 3500S
1x Rover 620
2x Rover 820's - one of which is a Vitesse
2x Triumph 2000's (one of which is the camera car)
1x Triumph 2.5PI
1x Triumph 2500S Estate
1x Triumph GT6
1x Triumph Spitfire Mk IV - 1300
1x TR6PI

Sadly, two other injection TR6's have had to cancel at the last
minute. One belongs to a High Court Judge and the other to a Barrister
and both live very close to one another. Both of them have to be in
Court on Monday morning at the beginning of a very sordid trial for
rape. I am particularly sorry that Mr. Justice Tonking won't be
present as he had promised to do as much of the event as possible, top
down and wearing both his court robes and wig as there was substantial
extra funding coming our way if he had taken part, thus attired. I
understand his wife went to a lot of trouble stitching some knicker
elastic to His Lordship's wig so it didn't get blown off in the
slipstream. This was alleged to be a major problem on a 'dry run'
earlier this week.
If you'd like to be a tape recipient, please contact me off-list
within the next week with the details requested.

Cheers, Jonmac

PS If any UK lister wants to take part, even at this late stage, I've
still got one or two spare rallyboards and some extra copies of the
road book. No entry fee but just make sure you're at Gaydon for a
prompt start at 11.00 on Saturday 18th. Finish is at Oakanger near
Alton in Hampshire.
