Fellow Enthusiasts:

Glad to report the problem has been solved with considerable help from the
list and
especially FT from Va.
The previous owner had improperly installed the pulley on the water pump
housing. It was apparent after removing the pump and pulley that a new
channel had been grooved into the pulley's core. He had attempted to fit the
pulley after the housing was in place on the car and unless your pulley and
pump are mated well prior to installation you may have a problem doing it
that way. Because of the improper fit there was a slight wobble which
produced the metallic clang as the pulley hit the housing. Also the fan belt
was pulled very tight which may have made it worse.
Fortunately for me my parts bin yielded a good unused or rebuilt original
pump that had a slight problem with the shaft thread produced when the pulley
was dislodged with a hammer without fitting a nut prior to the procedure. My
machine shop friend rethreaded the injured portion and I was on my way. I
was lucky in that I was able to put the pump on the car and then fit the new
pulley on the keyway. I marked the groove line on the outside of the pulley
to make it easier to line up with the key. It worked on the second attempt!
Another dividend is a stronger charge from the generator as my horns sound
louder and brighter. I thought there was a bad ground before but now they
sound clear as a bell.
Almost time to buy the badge bar and driving lights!
Thanks to all.
