I have a '76 TR6 and need some ideas on trouble shooting
a bad idle problem. I may have more than one problem
here so stay with me while I describe the problems and
results of my troubleshooting so far.
Here goes, The car runs great on the open roads plenty
of power and no pops, sputters or backfires. After
running the car for a while and getting into stop and go
traffic the idle will hold for about 30 seconds and then
start to jump around by a few hundred RPM and start to
sputter. The engine will stall at that point if I do
not start feathering the throttle.
What I have done so far, Carbs rebuilt about a year ago
with gross (sp) jets installed, I have adjusted the by
pass valves. One valve has plenty of impact on the
RPM's as you adjust it in and out. The other marginal
at best. I have rechecked the float adjustments,
twice. Is there a new setting for using Gross jets?
I pulled all the plugs to check and they are black
indicating rich mixture. I lift the damper on both
carbs up about 1/4 an inch and the engine stalls
indicating lean. There in lies my conflict. Which
indicator do I believe? Plugs or carbs.
Any troubleshooting tips would be appreciated.
