>There are two type of seals currently available. One is actually made
out or rawhide by Chicago Rawhide. It has an internal spring to keep
the rawhide firmly pressed onto the pinion gear. The second type is
made out of a rubber, or a Teflon, material.
For those of you that have replaced your pinion oil seal, what is your
current recommendation between the two types?
<
The next time I replace that seal I will get two rubber seals of 1/2 the
thickness and put them both in. This will make the seals ride on a
fresh part of the pinion flange.
The problem is that over time the seal wears a groove in the pinion flange
and installing a new seal that rides on that grove it will a) leak anyway
and
b) wear the seal out prematurely.
It is likely that the outer seal will ride on the rusty portion of the
pinion
flange (that was formerly outside the old seal) and not do any good
but what the heck.
Good luck
Dave
