I beg to differ. I think these products should probably not be thinned (I 
have no experience with the home made variant, though).

The way to properly apply waxoyl-like substances is to heat them well
before application. I put the cans in a water bath - not boiling - but
pretty hot, as hot as you dare. Be sure to puncture the can seals
beforehand, otherwise pressure will build up within the can. 

The heating ensures the liquid reaches a water-like state, which is
particularily useful when spraying within closed structures. It creates a
fine mist around the nozzle that clings to everything, and which seems to
have good creeping properties.
