Brad, and list,

I've done my TR4 engine at least twice with a seal mandrel I had made
where I used to work. It is steel, 2.823" in diam. I used it to
reinstall the original scroll seal, which has never dragged and has no
wear. I also used it on a friend's TR4A engine, with no reported
problems. I'd say the leakge is less than I expected. I've never
understood all the furor about changing to lip type seals, at least on a
street engine.

I did a Volvo B-18 engine, which also has a scroll seal. I didn't have a
mandrel for it, so I set up a feeler gauge at half the difference in
diameters. It took a little fiddling, but it went together and didn't
leak.

I came up an inch short on the rear bearing block felt seal. I got out a
spare piece of felt and found a moth-eaten tunnel thru it. It was late
and I wanted to close up the bottom end, so I made a section of seal out
of a wine cork. Shaped it up with a razor blade, dunked it in the cement
and hammered it in. Six years later, it's still there.
