It's the "anti-return" valve for the rear half of the MC that feeds the
front brakes.  When the pedal is released, the valve is 'tipped',
allowing pressure to equalize between the MC and the reservoir.  As soon
as the pedal is pressed, the valve should close, preventing fluid from
flowing back into the reservoir.  If it stuck or failed to seal for some
reason, you would expect a lower pedal, and increased braking effort,
since only the rear brakes would function.  The brake warning light
should also come on, when the PDWA senses the difference in front/rear
pressure.
