Dennis,
The groaning you described was common in TR3's in the late '50's and early
'60's. The fix you describe, of drilling the inner control arm and installing
a zerk fitting, was either a factory or distributor fix. I did it on a number
of cars at that time. Of course we didn't have WD40 then!
