I unfortunately do not know the specific differences (especially since I
have no idea what unit you bought). The Lucas parts are certainly
physically similar, but may differ in the amount of advance/retard, the
vacuum at which it starts, and the rate at which it occurs (with increasing
vacuum). Advance modules usually have the "vernier adjustment" shaft,
retard modules do not.
Your shop manual should have a spec for "static" timing, my suggestion would
be to temporarily disable the vacuum unit and set the timing to the "static"
spec. From there, you will have to see how the engine runs and adjust
accordingly. The amount of vacuum advance/retard is not very critical, so
chances are it will run fine. But the normal procedure for setting the
timing takes into account the retard from the retard module (if present), so
the 'normal' timing figure will be affected by any differences in the
module.
