I had this same problem on a '75 Spitfire.  Among other things, I changed the 
fuel
filter just in front of the fuel pump.  It ran fine for a day or two, but then 
the
same thing happened again.  I couldn't get a mile away from home without it
quitting.

To my surprise, I found another fuel filter 6" from the fuel tank...I never knew
it was there. After I replaced that filter I never had the problem again. I 
don't
know if this was an original location for the filter, or if it was on a TR6, but
it's worth a look.
