Can't help you on the "failing completely" aspect. As for changing it, yes, it
should be doable. I did it many, many years ago after obtaining a badly damaged
TR3B (Hi, Brad!) that I needed to be able to steer in order to move it about in
my yard. Despite the fact that the center of the front bumper and apron were
pushed back nearly to the radiator, etc., I was able to swap in a steering box
from '58 TR3A parts car I had lying around, to replace the 3B's original (which
probably had seized up for other reasons such as water entry or ????).
Of course, maybe I just didn't know better at the time, but the only thing I
took off and replaced -- successfully and with no extraordinary effort -- was
the steering box and associated linkage.
