Bill,
I was considering the very same approach - but how do you peen over the 
ends of the new studs?

Paul,
I used a Dremel tool to grind down the inboard part of the stud that was
peened over. Was careful to:
Not grind on the hub itself, and
Not to get anything into the rear axle bearings.
Unscrewed the studs by running two nuts back-to-back. Installed new studs
the same way.
