Carl,

Sears Craftsman sells a "pipe wrench" that is made from a thick rubber belt 
with a handle that sizes the loop.  Works for many things that are not 
pipes... like valve handles and plumbing fixtures.  I does not mar the surface 
it grabs.

The right tool is from the family of bicycle tools I used to have for hubs on 
my "english racer"
