bonnet and pulling the engine and transmission together.  Still, a
considerable job, and a considerable expense.

The other reason it is so expensive to change out the clutch in an XKE is
that the procedure to change the drive shaft U-joints is to, guess what? 
Pull the engine.  Consequently if you are changing a clutch you may as well
change the U-joints.  And While you're there, may as well do the rear
U-joints and brakes.  And control arm bearings.  And...
