I purchased my former TR-6 as a garage queen. It had sat for 6 years, fuel
jelled in the carbs and fuel line, etc. I spent a day to get it running and
drove it from Houston to the Detroit area over the New Years holiday. I had the
SAME SYMPTOM OF A NON FUNCTIONING POWER BRAKE BOOSTER. Two days after arriving
with the car in Michigan I drove it to my insurance agent to review/photo. When
I proceeded to leave his office, I backed up and when I put my foot on the
brakes, the petal went to the floor. If it were not for the 5 or 6 inches of
snow cover in the parking lot, I would have punched a large dent in the quarter
panel of a very new Jag. My master cylinder had failed - even pumping the petal
had no effect. In hindsight, I suspect that I did not have safe brakes from the
moment that I bought the car and drove it up Houston. Replacement of the MC
cured my poor braking problems.
I would suggest a test of removing and plugging the vacuum line to the booster
and seeing if the brake performance decreases. If that is the case, you
probably have a MC issue. If not, unplug the vac line and see if you have a
vacuum in the line at the booster. The line to the booster could be plugged.

All,
I still haven't heard from anyone that can explain why a booster that
doesn't leak provides no braking assistance.
The car passes the test where the brake is applied and engine speed is
observed. That is, there is no change in idle speed, indicating that the
vacuum system is intact.
However, the car remains hard to stop.
One of the gents on the list is experiencing the same problem and has a
new booster on order. He's promised to get back to me with the results
once it's installed.
In the meantime, is there anyone else with such an experience, and
perhaps a solution, to share?
