Randall,
I beg to differ, On the fifteen or more different cars with dual circuit
brakes that I've had the pleasure of bleeding, EVERY one has been the same,
including the 93 Ranger with ABS that I just did a couple of weeks ago with
only 45 thousand miles on it - so either I'm doing something wrong. . or.
.they all perform pretty much the same way. A failure of the shuttle would
only show up as a "no indicator". It in no way shunts, or biases, one
system over the other - its simply an indication that you have lost
pressure on one side, something that can be identified (probably much
quicker) with ones right foot.
I'm not saying that they don't work at all, and maybe in a panic situation
jamming on the brakes in a dual circuit system with a partial failure will
provide some measure of braking. Fortunately, I have never had the
*pleasure* of finding out. But with gentle pressure, the pedal in every
car I've done when bleeding, goes to the floor -you make the call-
FWIW all the braking systems on my vehicles are in top shape, with all new
or rebuilt components, none over 4 years old, with very firm pedals, very
little effort required to stop the vehicle and as indicated on the few
occasions when I have had to over 27 years of driving, I have been able to
lock all four wheels - I change the *fluif* every three to four years,
because I for one am very serious when it comes to braking and braking
systems - I never look at a part and think It looks ok, I'll use it. If
it's suspect in ANY way, I replace it-
The failures have luckily occurred when I have just been pulling out of my
driveway - or when I have just gotten in the car and tested the brakes -
and when they did, it was pedal to the floor, no brakes - no *prior*
warning, and by the way, the PWA does work- -
