...from a lurker on the digest and former wildlife biologist (beginnings of
a bio there)....the 'V's that migrating birds form create a lift/drag
advantage for the for the folks behind the leader (see www.nascar.com).  The
aerodynamics are affected by wind direction etc. so the 'V's will vary from
symmetrical to asymmetrical depending on the relative direction of any
headwind.  They aren't always skewed
