According to my copy of "Motor's Automobile Trouble Shooter" from 1972, under 
the heading of "Lack of Power or High Speed Performance", one of the 
suggested problems to check is "Inaccurate speedometer (gives impression of 
lack of performance)".

Hey Fred... if all else fails, hang your head out the window... it'll at 
least seem faster.
