Peter,

It depends on how well the gasket is stuck to the plate and block. In my
case it was stuck pretty good (well) and I had to use an exacto knofe to
cut the gasket. On reassembly I cut a patch piece from a new gasket (I
bought a lower gasket kit anyway) and slobbered it up with plenty of
sealer. And it doesn't leak much at all (no drips on the driveway).

Another important step is to loosen the fan belt otherwise you won't
be able to get the upper #1 shell out.

If you don't already have one get a copy of Len Renkenberger's Six
Tech. It is a collection of homespun techniques for maintaining
and improving a TR6. He has a chapter on this very thing.

Good luck
