Painting engine block - 3A

Hello list:
A question regarding painting the engine block.  Is is OK to paint the
mating surfaces on the block i.e. the surface on the head/manifold joint
and the water pump outlet on the front of the block?  Will the paint
compromise the gasket/block seal in any way? Just wondering before I get
into this on the weekend.
