Armstrong shocks

What's the modern equivalent of "Armstrong shock fluid"?  I don't suppose
the 18 year old at Wal-Mart will know.

Also when filling the shock, should the car be jacked up by the axle (so the
shock is "compressed") or by the frame (so it's "extended").
