Hi,
This is NOT one of my engines, but that of the son of one of my work
colleagues.
Having heard a rumbling from the bottom end of his engine, he decided
to fit new main bearing shells (with the engine in situ in the
Spitfire). On tightening the centre bearing cap to the correct torque,
the cap split around the fixing holes, and crushed the bearing in the
process! I don't know how or why this happened (though I can think of
several possible reasons off the top of my head), and I've not seen the
damage myself. My question is this: Is there any way this engine can be
salvaged? I realise the block and caps are machined as a unit, so does a
scrap bearing cap really mean that the entire block is now scrap?
If anyone has any ideas I'd be glad to hear them,
                Cheers,
                        Bill.
