Imagine if British Leyland ponied up development costs for a completely
new, redesigned Spitfire after 1980. Imagine that they took four or five
years to develop a new prototype Spit and another three years tooling up
and rolling the first Spitfire Mk 5 off the assembly line at Triumph's
Canley factory. Imagine the splash it would have made . . . one year
BEFORE the Miata shows up in 1989! But, as we all know, it was British
Leyland's intent to close the Canley factory (home of the Spitfire) all
along, thus sealing the Spitfire's fate.
