My thanks to all of you on your advice re: my steering problem.   I had not
considered so many variables as provided by the people on this list, and have
checked most of them.

I'm still working on the problem - latest suspect is the steering rack and
inner tie rod on the driver's side.

However, I received a number of good hints that will guide me in making
changes to the car.
