Martin,
Apparently, an unprimed pump - especially one where it is not immersed in
oil in the sump - can result in trashed bearings in very short order.
'Practical Classics' magazine published 101 top tips a few years back (Dec.
'93?) and said to prime an new oil pump by packing it with petroleum jelly
before installing. That ensures the pump will pick up oil from the sump as
soon as the engine starts. The jelly quickly dissolves as oil begins to
circulate. I used this trick a few years ago and it seemed to have done
the trick.
