Removal of sending unit

Dear List-
I have removed the gas tank from my TR3B, and it needs some patch work. I need
to take the sending unit out of the tank. I loosened all the screws in the
ring around the unit, but it remains locked tightly down. Do I have a frozen
gasket underneath, or is there something else I need to know? The Bentley
manual gives no advice. Can you?
