Said mystery springs sandwiched between the bellhousing and gearcase are
found on all small TR gearboxes. Their only function(s) appear to be to
preload the laygear in a rearward direction (and provide a very handy
leakage point as the lowest of the 3 is immersed in the oil).
Spitbits has them, failing this, grab another owner who has a box of parts
and snag some. My GT's box had none either - but then again, it wasn't
working when I got it.
