If things have got this sloppy, the lever bush kit is an essential. During
re-assembly, some very sticky grease might be helpful as well, to hold one
or two things in place that might otherwise go 'poing' into distant
locations. It's highly likely too, that once you've got the kit back in
place, you'll notice the lever is stiffer to operate and possibly with
shorter throws. This is quite normal as the assembly when new, was inclined
to be very notchy. Just mention this in case you think something 'has gone
wrong' in the re-fitting process. Gave my GT6 the same treatment three
years ago. On test drive it felt notchy - and then I remembered it was just
the same feel as that dark November night in 1969 when I drove it for the
first time.
