First, thanks to all who responded. The majority opinion was that I need the long coupling nuts to spread the load across more threads on the rod. Bill Babbitt kindly loaned me his tool (its built with the long coupling nuts); after I've used it I'll post instructions on how to build an effective spring compressor.
