Hi-

I had several layers of cause for my car's sputtering. On the fuel
side, it was the diaphragms. For the electrical, the coil went bad, it
worked fine when it was cold but after the engine heated up, it would
get weak and the sputtering would start. I was able to prove this by
taking a clip lead and bypassing the ballast wire. Once I did this, the
sputtering was gone. It's safe to do this only for a short time though.

After I replaced the coil, the car still sputtered a little bit. It
turned out to be a bad plug wire, it had broken internally and then
burned at the break. Actually, replacing the coil made the wire get
worse, I think, because of the stronger spark. The way to test this is
to observe the distributor cap in the dark. If you see any arcing across
the cap (or on the top of the coil), you have a bad wire. This is the
sign that the spark is finding a alternate path to ground other than the
plug.

Hope this helps.
