OK, here's a wrench into the works...

I'm pretty sure the 4-cyl TR engines have 2 valve springs per valve, and
the TR4/4A has 3 on the exhaust valve...

So if you check them periodically and notice that _one_ is broken, replace
them ALL!  The car will still run with one spring (rather than two) but,
as you say, valve float should occur... probably around 3000 rpm (that's
just a guess)

my Dad's '69 Chev pickup (RIP) once decided to jump the timing chain... so
the valves didn't work right... big kablooie!  But that's another story
