I have just replaced the bushes in our carburettors. Getting them out
was major headache, and I didnt want to let any of the local cowboys
loose with a pillar drill that would not drill a central straight hole.

My throttle shafts were very sloppy indeed, and not only had the bushes
virtually disappeared, but the shafts were very badly worn also,
different amounts of wear on the different ends of the different shafts
also, so i got some new ones from the NZ distributor.  $31 each NZ. 
When one sprayed water around the shafts, thsi was sucked in, the engine
lost out temporarily, and then the mixture went rich.  This showed where
the air was getting in to make the mixture weak at higher revs

In the end I made a very small chisel, (out of an old drill bit) and
very carefull chiseled away at the bushes until I could collapse them
and pull the remains out.  This caused a little cosmetic damage to the
carbs, but very very minor, but at least the holes were the original
ones.

I had thought that all sorts of problems would occur on rebushing the
carbs, but this wasnt so.  I used genuine SU replacment parts from the
distributor in NZ.  



>From my experience with back brakes, take out all the pins and links
that you can, get a can of WD40 and spray everthing in site.  Take out
the two scres that normally hold the drum onto the axle and again plenty
of spray in there,  I have seen rust form a bond between the drim and
axle that takes a bit of shifting, then GENTLY tap around the outside of
the drum with a lead hammer, until it get boring, this normally will
break the bond.  Otherise you could try a pair of pullers very gently. 
But in 35 years of rebuilding old cars I have never broken a drum yet.

One thing I would do, if I was to start a major rebuild off on a car I
didnt know, would be to buy one of these new digital cameras and take
lots and lots of picutes of things as I took them apart. Had one spring
on the SU carbs that flicked off when taking it apart, and it took about
2 hours to figure out exactly how it went back on.

ANother thing to look for is the which way the butterfly valves go. 
Record exactly which end sticks out...so on, you get the idea.  When
putting them back in look very carefully at the bevelled edges on these,
if lost then these are the key, but I guess that you should check them
anyway.

Another thing also is make sure that you get the right carb rebuild
kits.  Check exavtly what sort of carbs they are.  i ended up getting
the kits for the HS4 instead of the HS6 kits, and also did not end up
getting the emmission control carb kits.  The jets differ between the
two, which caused some alarm when my needles, even though worn, were too
fat.  I got some new ones in the end anyway.  Whilst rebuilding it is
worth replacing every thing so as there are now worries afterwards.

Make sure that you take a picture of all of the throttle linkage bits,
you may think that you can remember which way they go, but when it comes
to putting them back, it may be completely different.

As for the brakes...are they the same as the Triumph 2.5TC??

If so:  You may be able to look through the hole in the drum and 'flick'
off the adjustor.  This may be holding on the brakes.

OR:  One day when my car wouldn't move at all.  We think what happened
was that when I washed it some water got on the brake lining and fused
it to the drum when I pulled on the handbrake!  Nothing that  sharp jab
of the throttle doesn't sort out!

I had many problems with my brakes dragging.  Only when we got it axle
stands, took both sides wheels and drums off, moved up the adjustors,
and then gently trod on the brakes to get the adjustors to 'set
themselves' did it actually sort it out!  The amazing thing is that my
handbrake goes also, I can now park on a hill!


Anyway, this email is getting a little long now, and with my other one
that I sent I am sure that I have taken up enough space on everyones
screens for today, so will detail the condition of my carbs and the
symptoms of when they are completely worn out tommorrow......

But before I go I have to share my excitement with every one...,.I found
a 2.5TC body shell at the wreckers with engine and gearbox, and they are
basically paying me to take it away, as otherwise it will cost them to
do so in the end anyway.  All of the bits that I need to replace body
wise on mine are good on this one.... and they only want $100!!!!!! 
However the tricky bit is trying to get it home somehow!

Also, are there many people on the mail list who own 2.5 TC;'s or
PI's???????  Would love to hear from you if there are
