trans plug part 2

OK....vice grips have chewed the living hell out of the trans plug and it
hasn't budged. Haven't tried heat yet (will a torch to cast aluminium have me
looking for answers to a whole new problem?) If I fill her up by removing the
top cover, does the gear lever need to be removed first, or for my purposes
can I simply remove the 8 bolts, lift the cover and pour in the fluid?
